photo of Mary A. Stapp at work Mary A. Stapp is a self taught carver who has been at her craft since 1980. Retirement gave her room to try something that had been on her mind for a long time. Mary’s work is never duplicated and is crafted only by the use of hand tools. It is exciting for Mary to begin with a piece of wood, an idea, and her own talents, and finish with a unique carving. Yew wood is her favorite to work with because of its color, hardness and stability. Her favorite thing is to create a bird or animal that can be understood and appreciated. After using Johnson’s floor wax as a finish, Mary gives each piece an appropriate name. Mary’s carvings are in collections all over the United States.
