The feel of wood: textures, colors, weight and distinct fragrance draw me to this work. The unique grain patterns, spalting, and knots add to the excitement of each new piece. Designing for beauty and function challenges the cooperation of left and right brain. The process of making crisp joints that resound when fit together is as important as that moment when the whole piece stands alone, a new creation with its own identity. The hardest part is the waiting through the final sanding. Time drags like waiting for sunrise on a very special morning. Finally, it is ready for the finish and the outcome of all the planning and work that has gone into the piece. the oil, rubbed on by hand, brings it to life and is,... as the wood always is... incredibly beautiful.
SMARTWOOD forestry certification program has given me the hope that our planet earth can be recovered with natural forests, and bestow gifts of beautiful wood for woodworkers, like myself, to use with appreciation and respect.
