Lance and Karen Howell

[shaker boxes]
We make our oval boxes in six sizes, and in at least twelve different woods. Sizes range from extra mini, at 7 inches long, to the extra large, at 13 inches.

Jefferson Woodworking has been making oval boxes, inspired by those produced by the early American Shaker communities, since 1983. Our specialty is the use of many varieties of wood, a number of them found in the local area. Lance's efforts in obtaining these woods, and in having them milled by an attentive sawyer, yields an array of boxes made of woods that are simply not obtainable through regular lumber markets.

Lance is seen below with the cherry rocker, upholstered in woolen fabric hand-woven by Karen. In the early 1980's, during Jefferson Woodworking's first years, we built many floor looms for hand weavers. The rocking chair, designed for beauty and comfort, happily combines our abilities.

Our chocolate box is a rectangular box with a sliding lid, designed specifically to contain a one-pound brick of premium Belgian semisweet chocolate.

We consider information to be a part of our product. All our Shaker boxes contain a card or leaflet describing the wood, the construction of the box, and a paragraph about our business. In some cases we include a picture and a brief story about the actual tree the box was made from. Chocolate boxes include a simple recipe for chocolate truffles.
